Statement by H.E. Mr. Samvel Mkrtchian, Head of Armenian Delegation to the Kabul International Conference on Afghanistan Kabul, July 20, 2010
Dear Mr. Chairman, Esteemed Colleagues,
I am pleased and honoured to represent the Republic of Armenia at this conference. The importance of this landmark event will be judged by the time ahead of us. The situation in Afghanistan and the fight against international terrorism is of profound common concern to the world community. We all have stake in bringing sustainable peace and stability to Afghanistan, in containing the spread of violent extremism and in reversing the trends of social backwardness. Thus, it is of utmost significance to put incremental joint effort to achieve our goals. The only viable way to achieve stability and security in Afghanistan is the building and strengthening of the state structures, is the improvement of governance that will earn the trust of people and will ensconce the public perceptions of ownership. Reasonably quick and visible progress of economic and social situation should underpin the efforts aimed at putting the country back on the track of internationally assisted sustainable development. This, quite understandably, requires a joint endeavor coming from all factions of the Afghan society. It means that reconciliation and reintegration are crucial. All those processes should be parallel and mutually reinforcing. Armenia fully supports the policy of transition and believes that the key to success is the well-thought slow but sure approach. It should be based on conditions on the ground and without timetables set in stone. NATO’s and its Partners continued involvement is remaining the core assurance that the international community will eventually prevail. We need to stay in the country for the foreseeable future to accomplish the tasks that we have set for ourselves.
Thank you. |
